FCP Windows Attach Kit 3.0 on NOW

On April 13, I officially closed up my first development cycle at NetApp with the release of our FCP Windows Attach Kit 3.0. April 13 is the date it was posted to NOW (NetApp On the Web) — meaning it is now available. What is the Attach Kit?

The FCP Windows® Attach Kit 3.0 contains the software components you need to configure a Microsoft® Windows 2000 and 2003 machine into the host component of a NetApp SAN environment. The individual system components of the NetApp SAN environment are a Windows host and an attached NetApp storage system running Data ONTAP software. The storage system and host are connected with either direct or fabric connection methods.

This release includes support for AMD64/x64 (64-bit architectures), support for the QLogic 2460 and 2462 4GBps initiators, support for the Emulex LP11000 and LP11002 4GBps initiators (both PCI-X and PCI-e) and more.

Akismet is fantastic!

A few months ago, I began to receive spam comments here on my blog. At first, it was only one or two..but that quickly became ten or so per day. I decided to activate the built-in Akismet plugin for Wordpress, and it turns out to have been one of the best decisions I’ve made. This is the message I got when I logged in today:

Akismet has protected your site from 1,062 spam comments.

I highly recommend this plugin to anyone on Wordpress!

Password Humor

I was reading through my RSS feeds this morning and laughed aloud when I read Catherine Helzerman's blog post "#$*^! Passwords…."  At IBM, this was my biggest frustration.  I mean, I completely understand the need to change passwords — but the criteria you have to meet is absolutely ridiculous.  It's not good enough to have 7-8 letters or numbers; in some cases, it has to be upper and lower case, include a number (but not begin or end with one), not match any of your previous x passwords, and the list goes on.  Catherine hit the nail on the head when she said that it's sorta counteracts any security gain, because the passwords are so complex (and have to be changed so often) that the person who's supposed to remember it usually doesn't.  And what's that mean?  That means they either 1) create some password.txt file, 2) put it on their pda or 3) write it down somewhere.  I know I was guilty of #1.  Catherine has even drawn a cartoon to illustrate the frustration…check it out!

Best Places For Business And Careers

Forbes released this year's Best Places for Business and Careers with Raleigh, NC and Durham, NC both making the top 10.  Raleigh, NC came in a #2 and Durham, NC came in at #8 according to the list for Best Metros.  The home town of my alma mater (Las Cruces, NM) came in as #2 on the Best Smaller Metros list.

I find it very interesting (and odd) that of all places, Albuquerque, NM came in as #1 on the list.  It must be attributed to the fact that it was rated #1 for Cost of Doing Business.
