Yes I’m a nerd. Yesterday was the grand opening of the new Apple Store - Crabtree Valley Mall. This is the second Apple Store in the triangle, and it’s right down the street from me. Previously, I was visiting the Apple Store at the Streets of Southpoint in Durham. So, why am I a nerd? Well, A) because I’m posting about this on my blog and B) because I stood in line for 55 minutes at the grand opening yesterday at 10:00am to get a free Apple T-Shirt. They were giving the T-Shirt away to the first 1000 people to visit the store…I figured surely I’d be one of the only ones in line since it’s 10AM on a Saturday. Boy was I wrong (but I did get the T-Shirt -Ed)! I didn’t get any pictures, but a quick search on Flickr yielded a lot of pictures from ashton27332:

As always, this is late. On June 19, the Carolina Hurricanes won the Stanley Cup defeating the Edmonton Oilers in a very intense Game 7 here in Raleigh at the RBC Center. I must admit, I’ve never been much of a hockey fan, but with the Hurricanes being Raleigh’s only professional team (and doing so well), I really enjoyed watching the games. I wasn’t willing to pay the $120+ for tickets during the playoffs, but I did watch most of the playoffs on TV.
One of the other fun things about this was that my cousin Elizabeth in Phoenix is an Edmonton Oilers fan. There were many emails and text messages sent back and forth between us during the finals…it was all in good fun. : )
Congratulations to the Hurricanes, and who knows…I may just end up buying some tickets next season.

Last week, Rebecca's parents flew in for a visit. On the evening of June 7, we were sitting in the living room and the question came about…what does NetApp do? Everytime I am asked this question, I find it incredibly difficult to explain. Even if the person is computer savvy, it's a challenge. I always think of just a little over 3 1/2 years ago when I joined IBM as an intern — this whole world of Enterprise Storage was new to me. I had no idea what these huge boxes were used for, much less what Fibre Channel or iSCSI was. But, I made a 'best-effort' attempt to explain what we do by using the good old pen and paper.
Anyway…the very day after I faced this situation, Dave Hitz blogged about the same situation with members of a Jury…

After having the issues with my previous laptop (and working for a storage company), I decided to get a USB 2.0 external hard drive to (regularly) backup all of my data. I chose a Maxtor USB 2.0 drive and it seemed to work fine for a few days, but I quickly ran into some issues. The MacBook Pro wouldn’t even mount the drive. I thought it was just the drive, so I went to the local CompUSA and bought a USB 2.0 enclosure and a Samsung 300GB drive. I had the exact same problem. When I did a ‘cat /var/log/system.log’, I could see various messages similar to this one:
May 16 23:16:14 XXX kernel[0]: USBF: 12462. 59 AppleUSBEHCI[0×36e2000]::DoIOTransfer - error 0xe000404f queueing request
I have filed a bug with Apple (#4550783) and they are currently investigating the ‘ioreg -l -w0′ output. If I switch and use a Firewire compatible enclosure, everything works great. Has anyone else had problems with this? I’ve heard this has been an ongoing issue, not anything specific to the MacBook Pro.

Lately, I’ve been trying to post more about technology than personal matters, but I can’t leave this announcement out. On May 29, I got engaged to Rebecca — I finally popped the question after over five and a half years of dating….and guess what? She said yes. Rebecca has been there for me through all of life’s ups and downs. I owe a lot to her, and am truly blessed to have such a loving and wonderful person as my fiancee.
